Community Guidelines
Neighbors helping neighbors. Let's keep it that way.
HungryWatch works because neighbors help neighbors. These guidelines keep the community safe and the map trustworthy.
✅ Do
- Post a red pin only when you genuinely need food
- Post a green pin only when you have real food available right now
- Remove your pin as soon as your need is met or your food is gone
- Include allergen information if you are sharing food (nuts, dairy, gluten, etc.)
- Use a public or semi-public location for food pickup when possible
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, leave and call 911.
❌ Don't
- Post fake pins. This wastes community goodwill and could keep someone in real need from being seen.
- Include your phone number, email, or social media handle in a pin note
- Ask for money, payment, or personal information in exchange for food
- Use the platform for commercial advertising or promotion
- Target or contact other users in an unwanted or threatening way
- Discriminate against anyone. Food is for everyone, regardless of background.
⚠️ Remember
- HungryWatch does not verify users or inspect food. Use your own judgment.
- Your exact location is never shown, only your general neighborhood.
- If you see something wrong, tap "Report" on any pin. We review all reports.
- Meet in public. A porch pickup is safer than inviting someone inside.
Sharing food safely
HungryWatch does not certify food safety, but a few habits keep everyone well:
- Only share food you would give to a neighbor: freshly prepared, properly stored, within date
- Share hot food within about two hours of cooking, and keep cold food refrigerated until pickup
- List allergens in your pin description (nuts, dairy, gluten, and so on)
- Do not share food if the packaging is damaged or you are unsure how it was stored
You are sharing food as a community gesture, not as a food business. California's Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (Health & Safety Code Section 114432) protects people who donate food in good faith.
⚠️ Need help now?
- Emergency or immediate danger: call 911
- Food, housing, and crisis support: call or text 211 (available 24/7)
- Mental health crisis: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
Enforcement
Violations of these guidelines may result in pin removal, account suspension, or a permanent ban. Severe violations involving child safety or physical harm are reported to law enforcement. For the full rules, see our Terms of Use.
